  • Ezra – Black man late 30s, Steady. Calming. Thoughtful. A loving husband with one eye always on the streets around him. Husband of Ayanna.

CHASING GODS

CHARACTERS:

DEIDRA CURTIS (AA) The mother. Fifty-three years old pastor of Holy ground baptist church. A devout christian, stern, and set in her way. Over the past few years, life has turned upside down for her. She’s now trying her best to set it upright again.

 IMMANUEL CURTIS (AA) The father. Fifty-four years old and ready to live for the first time. Whatever that means for him. OLIVIA CURTIS (AA) The daughter. Seventeen years old and only has nine weeks left before she’s off to Stanford on a full basketball scholarship. A tomboy. She’s comfortable being herself.

 ELIJAH CURTIS (AA) The son. Twenty-two years old. A lot is weighing on him. He’s never felt anyone truly understood him. And the person that did, is gone.

 JAMES “POPS” ALLAN (AA) The Grandpa. Seventy-six years young, but an old school player, let him tell it. Fresh as a brand new Cadillac. Showing signs of dementia. Deidra’s father.

 SANDRA TYLER (AA) The friend. Twenty-one years old, a firecracker. She can be as sweet as molasses, but don’t piss her off. Loyal to a fault. Close friend and ex-girlfriend of ELIJAH.

 

SETTING: ORLANDO FLORIDA, TIME: JULY 2016

Notes On Casting. Although the massacre at Pulse night club is an extremely sad, American story. This particular work is an African American story and actors should be cast as such.

WAITING FOR BURIAL

Play Ages 18 – 80 / 6 Roles

Waiting for Burial centers around a 72-year-old tetchy shut-in who, when authorities declare a mandatory evacuation for a killer storm headed straight for Muck City, Florida, chooses to stay and face death.

FLORA PATTERSON (70s-80s) African American, Female, a cantankerous, deliberate elder who keeps looks out for the community. She has a melodic voice and can break out in a hymn. She mourns the death of her grandson, Marcus, who died by gang violence.

TYRON (20s) African American, Male, a local drug dealer who stands outside all day in front of Ms. Flora’s building. He has swag and rolls like he’s gangsta. Everything about him spells “thug.” Exhibits a hardened exterior, but we know the truth.

JORDAN (40s) African American, Male, auto mechanic who lives down the hall from Ms. Flora. He’s aloof and means well, but appears aimless and useless. He’s been to camp, learned his lesson, now goes through the motions of life. Works during the week and drinks on the weekends. Disappears until Monday morning.

AMMA (30s) African American, Female, research scientist. The narrator who orientates us to the events to come. Has the wisdom of ancient sages. Comes across as mysterious yet, insightful. Amma sets the stage for a thought provoking Aesop at the end of the play.

TUFANI WEATHER REPORTER mid (20s) African American Female, Meteorologist.  She’s the first Black weather girl on local TV.

SISTER ECKFORD, (60s) African American Female, soothsayer, neighborhood church woman. God is her anchor as she sings and beats the Tamborine in the community to signify death is imminent.

AUTHORITIES, mid (20s)

NEWS PERSON (20s) Male, we hear the voice of a perky, a matter-of-fact reporter.

MARCUS (18 year-old) African American Male, Flora’s grandson. Died in a gang incident. We hear his voice in Flora’s dream.

TIME The present

PLACE. Muck City Florida. The action of the play takes place in Ms. Flora Pattersons living room.
